Storing Vinyl Flooring?

Tired of constantly cleaning the grout between the tiles on my kitchen floor and paying someone to replace a tile every time one was cracked or chipped, I had the floors in my kitchen replaced with vinyl flooring. I had no idea what companies were doing with vinyl these days. There is some very nice (and expensive) vinyl flooring on the market. I was nervous about putting vinyl down, as I remembered the “institutional-like” flooring in school and the hideous tri-color green vinyl that was in my grandmother’s kitchen in the 60’s (UCK!). The vinyl is, for lack of a better word, soft with a thick spongy backing (it feels great under my feet). I did have a professional come in and install it and replace the molding. Now all I have to do is run a Swifter over it and it’s clean. I’m very happy with my choice and would suggest that other’s look into it when making their flooring selections. What I didn’t consider was how should I store the remnant. It’s a very large piece (I bought extra just in case) and I want to make sure it’s not damaged if the day comes and I need it. I’m hoping someone out there knows about vinyl flooring and can help me. Should I roll the piece tightly or loose? Once rolled, should I secure the roll with string? Should I cover it in plastic? Would it hurt to store it in my basement (not heated or cooled) or would it last longer if placed in the back of a bedroom closet. I would assume the roll would do better over time laying down versus standing in a corner. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Answer
Sheet Vinyl will store easily if it is rolled face out on a cardboard tube. Do not tape it, as the tape will yellow the vinyl over time, and a string would leave indentations. Instead secure it with saran wrap. Storing it in an unheated basement is fine, but lay it down flat. If it is cold when you go to use it, bring it upstairs and allow it to acclimate in a heated room for 48 hours before trying to unroll it.
